Welcome to my first ever blog post. Blogging should be easy for me. After all, I’ve been a reporter, writer and PR man for more than forty years. But, I have to admit to a certain unease. This is the first time I’ve written something without an editor, lawyer or even a proofreader, between me and the reader. At least I have spellcheck going for me – or should that be spell check?
So where to start? Perhaps I’ll just share a story.
In the early 1980s I was working for The Stars & Stripes, the newspaper for U.S. forces in Europe. A photographer and I were visiting a base in northern Turkey on the Russian border. The place was ancient – old before Ataturk was born. But in the middle was a brand new, aluminum-skinned geodesic dome – spook central for eavesdropping on the Russians. Then I went into the barracks to use the bathroom, I lifted the lid and saw this on the underside: Non Potable.
So someone – CIA, Army Intelligence, NSA? – built a state of the art spy center then staffed it with people they thought were so stupid they had to be told not to drink from the toilet.
